چکیده

Neutral hydrogen (H I ) has been detected in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy Sculptor with the 64 m Parkes single dish and mapped with the Australia Telescope synthesis array. Most of the detected H I is in two clouds ∼ 15 − 20 away from the optical center. The gas is observed at the same systemic velocity than the stars but at ≥ 125 km s away from the Magellanic Stream components in that region. A lower limit to the H I mass of 3.0 × 10 M⊙ is derived from the synthesis observation for an (MHI/LB)≃ 0.02. This amount of H I is compatible with mass loss expected from normal giants even if only 10% of the gas is retained by the galaxy in its neutral form. 2 00 4 ‘ Sculptor ’ - ing the Galaxy ? The Chemical Compositions of Red Giants in the Sculptor Dwarf

We have used high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the VLT and UVES to determine abundances of 17 elements in 4 red giants in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Our [Fe/H] values range from –2.10 to –0.97, confirming previous findings of a large metallicity spread. We have combined our data with similar data for five Sculptor giants studied recently by Shetrone et al. t...

Search for HI in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies

After reviewing the HI content and distribution in extreme dwarf irregular (dIrr) and dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, previous searches for HI in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies will be discussed. I will report on the recent detections of HI probably associated with the Local Group (LG) dSph Sculptor and dIrr/dSph Phoenix, obtained with the ATCA, along with a similar detection in the Centaurus...

Multi-element Abundance Measurements from Medium-resolution Spectra. I. the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We present measurements of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 388 radial velocity member stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), a satellite of the Milky Way. This is the largest sample of individual α element (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) abundance measurements in any single dSph. The measurements are made from Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectra (6400–9000 Å, R ∼ 6500). Based on compari...

New observations of the neutral hydrogen (Hi) in and around the line of sight of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal (dSph) are presented. The data obtained with the single-dish Parkes telescope cover a large area of 7 × 7 in the direction of the dwarf, and have resolutions of 15.5 × 1.12 km s. The Australia Telescope Compact Array was used to map a smaller area of 2. 2 × 2. 2 centered on the directi...

An Internal Second Parameter Problem in the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We present BV photometry of the Sculptor dwarf galaxy to V = 22. These data give evidence for a bimodality in Sculptor’s metallicity distribution based on a discontinuity in the luminosities of horizontal branch (HB) stars and by the presence of two distinct red giant branch (RGB) bumps. A consistent picture of the evolved stars in Sculptor is given by the presence of (1) a metal-poor populatio...
